What counts as online shopping
Online spend is defined by how the payment is made rather than by what you buy: a purchase entered on a website or in an app, not at a terminal. Banks then remove the merchant types they don't want to reward — typically travel, government, insurance, education, utilities, e-wallet top-ups and anything paid through a bill-payment service. Foreign-currency online purchases may also carry a fee that eats into the cash back.

Questions and answers
Do in-app payments count as online?
Usually yes: an app purchase is card-not-present, like a website. Payments made with a mobile wallet at a shop's terminal are not online — some cards reward those separately as contactless or mobile payments.
Do overseas online purchases earn cash back?
Most cards pay their online rate in any currency, but foreign-currency transactions carry the bank's FX fee, often several times the cash back on a low-rate card. Check the card's FX fee before buying from overseas sites.
